Long Term Steroid Use Causing Certain Ulcers
What do think of when you hear the word steroids? Steroids have received more publicity and scrutiny because professional athletes have used them in a way they were never intended to be used. Professional baseball players have virtually ensured that no American household is without some knowledge or some idea of what steroids do to the human body.
Healthy athletes have used these drugs to enhance their performances on the playing field, leaving many of us wondering are these drugs actually capable creating a super human.
Let’s come back to that question a little later. It is necessary that we first establish that steroids (short for corticosteroid) are synthetic drugs similar to a hormone produced naturally in the human body, cortisol. These drugs help control normal body functions and conditions such as water balance, immune system function and sugar and salt levels in the blood. They are also used to treat diseases like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. Steroids are also used to fight certain mouth ulcers and mouth sores when they are particularly persistent.
These drugs can be highly effective when used properly and have been an asset to many patients suffering from various ailments. However, long term use of these medicines can have adverse side effects. Some users gain weight, develop ulcers, have more difficulty recovering from wounds, experience increased blood pressure or develop weakened immune system.
To answer the earlier question, steroids are capable of making us stronger and making our bodies more durable (quicker to recover) over a short period, but heavy, long term use seems to eventually break the body down in various areas.
In conclusion, it’s every important to think about the long term impact and consequences of a steroid use, especially when the usage is not for the purpose that was not intended for.
